The present work is the report of the activities done in the six-months internship in the
Advanced Powertrain Department at Toyota Motor Europe.
The activities carried out concern the research and development of the newest
technologies regarding electric motors. The research activity is focused on technologies
regarding permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and the development activity
is specifically focused on interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPM).
The structure of the work is based on a first analysis of the newest technologies through
a patents screening phase. This has laid the foundation to start thinking about potential
improvements in the actual electric motors installed on Toyota vehicles. Several solutions
are then presented as potential improvements for the next generation electric motors.
