Riassunto analitico
Abstract

Abstract
Abstract
The aim of this work is to analyse the play Partage de Midi (1906) by Paul Claudel and, more specifically, to situate it within the backdrop in which it was conceived, namely an Imperial China straddling the XIXth and XXth centuries. This will provide a greater understanding of the influence of the “Celestial Empire” on this writer. The pièce was written in 1905, while the author was serving as vice-consul to the French Consulate in many areas of the Empire. During his time in the Far East, Claudel met and fell in love with the woman who became almost an obsession for him: Rosalie Vetch. The play and the series of events which inspired it originate from the adulterous love that was born and consummated in China between Claudel and Rose, a setimental relationship that gave birth to a daughter.
The present work comprises of two chapters. The first introduces Claudel within the complex context of China with which he came into contact towards 1900, paying particular attention to the important position he occupied. It will subsequently focus on two works which were written and published while the author was still in the “Middle Kingdom”, namely Connaissance de l'Est and Le Repos du septième jour. The first chapter will conclude by evaluating the impact of the Chinese and the Japanese theatre on the playwright's works.
The second chapter is dedicated to the analysis of the play. In this chapter, key aspects of the text are examined in an attempt to comprehend the symbolic meanings which Claudel intended to attach to his work. We focused on the different characters and the complex relationships existing between them, the spatial items, the meaning of the theme of colonialism; finally, the literay influences that inspired Claudel.
