Abstract
This thesis investigates the accuracy of the Boussinesq approximation applied
to the Rayileigh-Bénard convection in a laterally unbounded cell, limited by two
horizontal walls at a fixed temperature. In particular, the main goal of this work is
to shed light on the effects that the approximation has on the solution, comparing
several direct numerical simulations (DNS). These are performed in OpenFOAM for
air at the same Rayleigh number (7 · 10^5) but exploiting different sets of equations.
Moreover, the results are obtained from different validity regions of the Boussinesq
approximation and, consequently, we are able to highlight the relevant disparities
between the exact and the approximated solutions, bringing exciting results.
