Abstract
Focus of the present work is the contamination inside the injection circuit of the mechanical Diesel engines made by Kohler Engines company.
These contaminants are transported by the fuel and, in some cases, can reach the nozzles of the mechanical injectors causing obstruction and then an irregular combustion in the cylinders, with the result that the engines perform poorly in terms of output power and emissions.
To address this problem, the various components of the injection circuit were investigated with the aim of identifying the source of contamination. Then, experimental tests were carried out on the components involved in order to identify possible improvements.
The performed tests concern the production process or supply of the components, so as to remove the contaminant from the parts and ensure that the components do not come into contact with contaminants before assembling on the engine. Furthermore, tests were carried out directly on the products to evaluate possible design modifications with the aim of reducing the production of contaminants within the engine fuel injection circuit.
The international reference standards for the cleaning requirements of a Diesel injection circuit and the corrosion resistance component requirements (ISO 12345 and ISO 9227) were analysed in detail, as well as the technical specifications required by the Kohler Engines regarding the testing procedures and the performance requirements required for components mounted on its engines.
