Abstract
Why and how should Death Education be done in kindergartens and primary schools? This is the great question from which this paper comes to life, trying to collect the most significant studies carried out so far in the field of Death Education. Focusing on the importance of educating children aged three to ten around dying through the didactic use of picturebooks and animated films, this thesis aims to highlight the lack of a space reserved for the theme of death inside our educational system and the absolute urgency to fill this gap by creating systematic, preventive, meticulously designed and, above all, child-centered educational courses about death. The choice to explore such a broad (and in some ways controversial) theme as that of Death Education at school is dictated, first of all, by the desire to delve into the depths of a need deeply felt by our society, which is re-introducing death within our lives, free us from the fears surrounding the subject to face our human nature with greater awareness. The denial and fear of death that characterize our age permeate every area of our existence, including that of education; parents and teachers often find themselves lacking the cognitive, emotional and educational skills necessary to answer the big questions that children ask. The inadequacy of the resources available to families and teachers relentlessly spills over on the skills of children, who frequently experience their first losses during early childhood, but who are rarely prepared for these events, due to the silence around the topic that dominates in our culture. The absolute need to preside over a still unexplored educational space, namely that of Death Education, becomes even more urgent in a historical moment like the present one, in which many children have measured themselves (or are measuring themselves) with the consequences of Covid-19 pandemic and with all the suffering it has brought with it. Furthermore, in the light of the evolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, schools today more than ever have to deal with experiences of collective death which, although far from the experience of our children, reach them thanks to the news. Teachers and educators cannot remain indifferent when facing all these upheavals, not only because children have the right to be educated to deal with grief before it affects their personal sphere, but also because major events such as those mentioned above can create extremely dangerous anxieties and worries in those who have not been "equipped" with the inner tools necessary to deal with similar situations. The objective of this paper is mainly to underline the significance and the urgency of a Death Education aimed at children of the first cycle of education that acts preventively, which integrates the theme into everyday teaching, importing death into education as we plan it to encourage children to develop a correct conceptualization on the subject and create the basis for building a school that is capable of forming aware, resilient and accepting future adults. The means by which it would be desirable to achieve such objectives are above all literature and cinema, in particular picturebooks and animated films, precisely because of their narrative characteristics which are suitable for children's thinking.
