Abstract
The main objective of the paper in the first chapters is to examine the role of patriarchy in past and contemporary society and the effects it has on people's lives. In particular, it will be shown how the patriarchal system is closely linked to the feminist movement and how these two concepts are interconnected. The aim is to disseminate useful information in order to improve the educational system, which has been limited since childhood by past sexist beliefs, which are now outdated and are no longer able to respond to the needs of this new, constantly evolving society.
Furthermore, at the end of the work a survey was carried out, through the administration of a questionnaire to samples of both male and female individuals. The statements within the latter were rated with an agreement or disagreement scale by the participants.
The thesis is divided into four chapters: in the first chapter the definition of 'feminism' is given, accompanied by the names of the most famous feminists who have publicly declared their position regarding patriarchal power and who have fought to bring about important and lasting changes. Struggles and important statements within a dangerous context for exhibitions that went against traditional ideology. It was also about the living condition of the woman in the past. Subsequently, the fundamental stages of the feminist movement were addressed, including the laws and demonstrations, which laid the foundations for the freedom that women are able to have today. These episodes have been divided into three paragraphs, one for each wave. We explored the main variations between the waves, i.e. the reason for the struggles that affected the feminist movements in the first, rather than the second or third.
In the second chapter we deal with defining the concept of stereotype, in particular of 'gender stereotype' and what are those related to the figure of the female sex. Then I examined the way in which these prejudices are transmitted in childhood through educational institutions or other places of aggregation, but also with fairy tales and games. In the central paragraphs, on the other hand, the consequences on women of a sexist education characterized by gender prejudices were explored. This is in the social, political, economic or cultural sphere. Finally, in the last paragraph a testimony of a university teacher at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia was reported regarding her own experience hampered by these beliefs.
In the third chapter, however, the thesis focuses on the negative consequences of gender stereotypes on men. We observe how patriarchy has hidden and continues to hide the effects and limits it also imposes on male individuals, who I believe only benefit from this unbalanced and unjust system. The standards of man's beauty will be reported and how these vary according to the historical and cultural context. Furthermore, we will briefly go through the history of the construction of the masculine identity and how this has created and continues to create psychological malaise. In the fourth chapter we proceed with the exposition of a research that has the purpose of analyzing in practical life what has been affirmed in theory in the previous chapters. The aim of the research is to collect data on attitudes towards stereotypes of women, men, feminism and the process of objectification that affects both genders.
