This paper aims at investigating the relationship among interpreter, doctor and patient, in interpreter-mediated medical conversations. In particular, the main objective is to highlight out the dynamic nature of the interaction. In specific working contexts such as institutional settings, interpreters play a very delicate role, and their actions can have serious consequences for the participants they translate from and for. In medical interaction, interpreters not only have an established knowledge of the field in which they operate, but they orient to l meeting the interactional expectations created in the context. One of the problems, for instance, particularly from the point of view of the patient, is that of distinguishing who is the source of information in that doctors’ talk is rendered by interpreters and interpreters my thus ne asked directly what was intended. Another problem is that related to cultural differences which may charcaterise habits and expectations in the patients’ and the host institutions and which may be dealt with extensively by interpreters in rendition to avoid misunderstanding. This work is divided into three chapters. in the first chapter I will offer a bibliographical discussion with particular reference to the role of the interpreter and how the other two participants revolve around such role; in the second chapter I will focus on the research methodology concentrating mainly on the work of Wadensjo (1998); in the third and final chapter I will analyze transcription extracts showing some specific aspects of the mediated conversations.
