Abstract
The present analysis has been carried out under the framework of Systemic-Functional Linguistics. It investigates the news reports about Chinese economy in the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera and those about Italian economy in China’s English newspaper China Daily. The research mainly draws upon the Appraisal theory of Martin and White (2005) and integrates the new developments of this theory provided by Bednarek (2006, 2008). It also combines insights from van Dijk’s (1988) and Bell’s (1991) analyses of the news and from Hunston’s evaluation theory (2000). In this research, discourse analysis and corpus-assisted analysis are adopted to examine the choices in terms of Appraisal made by Italy’s and China’s newspapers. Furthermore, from a socio-cultural point, the attitudes of Italy on China and those of China on Italy reflected by both newspapers are disclosed.
Two corpora have been constructed: the CS corpus which is composed of the news reports about China’s economy for the whole year 2014 in Corriere della Sera; and the CD corpus which is composed of news reports about Italy’s economy in the whole year 2014 in the China Daily. After closely reading and annotating each news item in both corpora, a comparison of the choices of the options available under each category of Appraisal – ATTITUDE, ENGAGEMENT and GRADUATION – has been made. The preferences of the two countries’ newspapers could reveal not only the particular stance towards the counterpart but also provide insights about the particular professional persona each newspaper is trying to construe.
The analyses show that the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera’s attention on China’s economy is rapidly increasing, especially in 2014 when China’s direct investments in Italy increased much more than in other European countries. Generally speaking, the CS news articles present more positive than negative attitudes towards China. And they tend to construe China as a big market and a tremendous colossus.
The Chinese newspaper China Daily focuses mainly on Italy’s economic position in the world and its high technology. The CD news reports show China’s great interests in Italy and its eagerness to cooperate with Italy. They also construe more positive attitudes towards Italy than negative ones.
The theoretical findings suggest that the three macro categories of Appraisal are very frequent in the two newspapers. China Daily prefers ENGAGEMENT to ATTITUDE, while, Corriere della Sera prefers ATTITUDE to ENGAGEMENT. GRADUATION occupies more than one third of the space allotted to the three macro categories of Appraisal in each newspaper. Under ATTITUDE, AFFECT and JUDGEMENT in CS are higher than in CD; while APPRECIATION in CS is lower than that in CD. This may indicate that Corriere della Sera reserves more space to evaluations on human feelings and behaviours; while, the China Daily gives more comments on things than Corriere della Sera. In ENGAGEMENT, Corriere della Sera is more likely to convey value positions through ‘monogloss’choices; on the contrary, the China Daily is more likely to expand the dialogical space and minimize the writer’s voice. The China Daily quotes reported voices from the outside more often than Corriere della Sera. The dialogical space of the China Daily is relatively wider compared with Corriere della Sera. For what concerns GRADUATION, both the CS and CD corpora use much more FORCE than FOCUS. When negative attitudes are presented, in both CS and CD down-scaling is used to soften the intensity of negativity.
The investigation on the corpora has also showed that the Appraisal theory could be further articulated to account for even finer distinctions.
