Abstract
Nature works according to a circular pattern... but are humans still aware that we are part of it?
The educational path "Do not waste your future... make it circular" that was held in a secondary school, started with this question. The aim was to raise awareness that, given the growing scarcity of resources on the Planet, it is essential to return to a circular dynamic, generating value from what the community considers as waste.
Starting from the analysis of the relationships existing within natural ecosystems, which function according to a circular pattern, the idea was to lead students to develop the awareness that humanity, thanks to economic and technological progress, has increasingly moved away from this paradigm, considering itself above the nature.
Through different teaching approaches that were aimed at encouraging and maintaining the involvement and interaction inside the class group, the educational path has allowed the students to become aware that it is no longer sustainable to follow the logic of the linear consumption thinking (take-produce-consume-discard).
The topics covered and the laboratory activities carried out addressed issues such as the 2030 Agenda, food waste, sustainable nutrition, circular bioeconomy and green chemistry. The proposed activities were divided into three main areas: "We are inspired by nature", "A healthy diet for us and for the environment" and "The future is circular". Each of these three areas refers to one of the fundamental learning modules established for the Science subject.
Throughout the course, a lot of time was spent in activities aimed at encouraging the involvement of the students in the production of teaching material (concept maps, drawings, posters, videos, etc.) both for internal use in the class group and for external dissemination of what they learned and reworked. The students enthusiastically joined the idea to create the Instagram page @futuro_circolare, in which everyone was engaged in the production of contents. The feedback received throughout the course and in particular after the creation of the Instagram profile was very positive, both in terms of concepts and skills learned by students as well as in relation to the awards obtained by participating in competitions or dissemination events that focused on sustainability.
This educational path is suitable for being repeated and implemented also in other contexts. For example, it could be readapted for primary school, simplifying some activities, or vice versa revised for upper secondary school by further investigating some topics (such as the chemical processes underlying the creation of new compounds and therefore of new biobased products).
The students will be able to understand that what they are taught is not something theoretical to be learned in a book, like a historical fact that happened some time ago, but something that concretely concerns their future. It is no coincidence that the title of the educational path "Do not waste your future... make it circular" is aimed directly at young people and asks them not to waste the future and the few resources of our Planet. Furthermore, the word "future" is also used to emphasize the message of thinking about their future job. The hope is that many of the students can find their own way in the field of the circular bioeconomy by thinking, designing and/or producing materials that today we can only imagine, and that tomorrow will be a reality… more sustainable and more circular.
This is because the future, even before it is in their hands, is in their minds and in their ability to imagine it.
