Abstract
Abstract:
The project is focused on the simulation of a Current Source Inverter (CSI) in a current fed electric motor for automotive purposes. A complete analysis of the DC-AC conversion, switching logic of the drive, filtering stages and torque production will be carried out. The starting point is represented by a classic Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) with well specified parameters and working point, simulated with a PLECS model formerly developed. After a discussion on the main features of the system, the CSI model will be presented, and the stages of its design will be thoroughly explained. In the last part of the thesis, a comparison between the two available technologies will be shown, with variable working points and an analysis on the advantages and drawbacks of the two options.
The general aim of this work is to present a new approach for the control strategy of Electric Motors (EM): nowadays, the usual logic relies on the voltage from the battery as main source; the possibility to exploit the current to manage the EM trajectories is something still regarded as difficult and disadvantageous. Therefore, the implementation of CSI in Electric Vehicles (EV) drives can represent a huge improvement for the future development of the field.
In chapter 1, an overview of the state of the art of the CSI for EV will be presented, with a focus on the most advanced technologies available in the field, even though at a laboratory or theoretical stage.
In chapter 2, a deeper analysis of the governing laws of Electric Propulsion System will be recalled: the equations for Inverters modulation strategies, Current and Voltage output, Full bridge converters and High frequency filters will be explained, together with an examination of the EM chosen for the following simulation.
In chapter 3, the two simulations employed will be analysed (VSI and CSI) and the focus will move to the actual model on PLECS. First, a general overview of the starting VSI system will be presented, then each feature of the CSI will be linked to the previously named equations and shown with different images and explanation. Finally, the model run will be carried out, and the main parameters as Torque, Rotor Speed, Phase currents and voltages will be described.
In chapter 4, the final aim of the work will be proposed: the comparison between VSI and CSI with the same working points. Graphs, tables and efficiency discussion will help to understand how to employ with good results the Current Source Inverter.
