Riassunto analitico
In a social-economic context characterized, in recent decades, by increasingly high pressure for more sustainable behavior, and increasingly heated debates, on the subject of large organizations and their impact on the environment; this paper aims to understand how companies can contribute to achieving global sustainability by improving economic, social and environmental performance through the ‘Sustainable HRM’.
The objective of this paper is to focus precisely on 'Sustainable HRM' trying to bring to light its main characteristics, objectives, and practices, also investigating its effects. In this regard, the research question is 'Has the discipline of human resources, which deals with the individuals who make up the human capital of the company on a daily basis, taking up the challenge of being a determining factor for a change towards sustainability? How? What has been the evolution of the strategies put into practice and what are the effects?'
On the basis of this question, the analysis was carried out with a detailed review of the literature, and in the paper, a specific evolution path of the discipline of human resources management was outlined, trying to explain what is meant by sustainability and what is its meaning in a business context. This analysis has provided evidence that Sustainable Human Resource Management leads to positive outcomes both for individuals and for the company and consequently also for the environment.
These objectives can be achieved if the organizations use sustainable practices for the management of human resources, aimed at improving employees’ well-being, commitment, and also engagement. The elements that could be further investigated in such a new discipline are highlighted.
