Abstract
This thesis work concerned the tribological coupling of three types of gasket materials
based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with AISI 304 stainless steel in sliding conditions
both dry and in water. In particular, "pin on disk" tests were carried out to evaluate the loss for
wear of the materials and the coefficient of friction produced by the various couplings and thus obtain indications
on the most suitable conditions of use for each of the various polyurethanes. Analyzes were also carried out
worn samples by scanning electron microscopy and infrared absorption spectroscopy
(FTIR) to identify the main wear mechanisms.
Based on the results, two of the three TPU types studied were found to be potentially suitable
for use in the “food & beverage” industry, because they have low friction coefficients and a rate
almost zero wear in the presence of water, a condition which, as a first approximation, simulates an environment
typical of the food industry. On the other hand, they are unsuitable for applications that require sliding a
dry, since in such conditions they showed a particularly high wear rate, associated with
phenomena of severe wear due to "folding", and have produced, in coupling with AISI 304 steel,
coefficients of friction greater than 1. The third type of TPU, filled with graphite as a solid lubricant,
instead it shows a particularly good behavior in dry sliding conditions, while
it does not show particular advantages in sliding conditions in contact with water.
