The main purpose of this study is to analyse the relationship between poetry and music in Langston Hughes’s works with a focus on "ASK YOUR MAMA: 12 MOODS FOR JAZZ" (1961), the most important work of the author and of jazz poetry. After a short introduction about the relationship between music and poetry in the western world, the first chapter takes into account the connection between these two arts in white American authors’ and musicians’ works such as Vachel Lindsay, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, and later, in African-American writers’ poems such as Sterling Brown, Melvin Tolson and Michael Harper. The second chapter is focused on Langston Hughes, the chief representative of jazz poetry. Firstly, it describes the Harlem Renaissance, the cultural movement to which he belongs. Secondly, it presents Hughes’s life, his works and his musical and literary education. Finally, the chapter analyses the most important themes and the musical style in some of his poems which show that he always opposes the African-American culture to that of white people. The last chapter analyses "ASK YOUR MAMA: 12 MOODS FOR JAZZ". It describes the historical context in which Hughes writes the poem, the Civil Rights Movement of the fifties, and it analyses the structure and the most important themes of the poem. The chapter ends with a detailed analysis of the tenth mood of the composition: "BIRD IN ORBIT".
