Cognitive abilities are composed of a wide range of skills that are measured in different ways. Strategic skills, connected with the ability of choosing the best option within a strategic context, have never found a reliable measuring instrument. The aim of the study is to verify the efficacy of the Strategic Quotient test, developed by E. Bilancini, L. Boncinelli and A. Matiassi. Data has been collected through the administration of the test to a sample made up of 187 university students and former students under 30 years old. The investigation was based on the application of Principal Component Analysis. Results have been found to be in line with the theoretical expectations of the existence of three core skills that, combined, compose strategic ability. These can be classified into two groups: knowledge of others (C) (made up of familiarity with the sample (F) and ability to typify people(T)) and dexterity with recursive reasoning (R). Furthermore, the research investigates the reliability of two extended versions of the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT; S. Frederick, 2005), developed by Primi et al. (2015) and Toplak et al. (2014). Our results confirmed a high correlation between these extended versions and Shane Frederick original one, and a strong predictive capacity of the CRT on the Strategic Quotient score, in accordance with the expected hypothesis of the deep importance of reflection skills in explaining strategic ability. In particular, CRT was found to be the best predictor of Strategic Quotient among many cognitive ability measures.
