Abstract
This thesis explores and analyses the use of language in the music industry, focusing on its most salient tool: the press release. After presenting the background and structure of the industry, we will describe and identify the genre, the typical features, and the relevance of music press releases nowadays and in the future. Moreover, we will investigate the use of promotional language within the music industry and see how the most popular and profitable labels promote anything related to the music world using press releases. Furthermore, combining corpus linguistics and genre analysis, we will explore the structure and linguistic elements of the documents published between 2013 and 2022 by eight record labels. The investigation will therefore be carried out in two phases: the first part will involve a more quantitative and qualitative analysis of the body of texts from a corpus linguistics perspective. The corpora will be scrutinized using the corpus linguistic software AntConc, which provides valuable tools (such as word frequency lists, keywords, collocates, and concordances) to examine the linguistic construction and lexico-grammatical patterns characterizing the selected texts. The focus will be on anything promotionally related and expressed through evaluative adjectives, adverbs etc. The second part will be conducted using genre analysis, with specific attention paid to the organizational structure of the selected press releases and a focus on the differences and similarities encountered in the texts. Finally, this examination will help us define the communicative purpose of a music press release with an additional assessment of its role and relevance in the future.
