Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to present the role of a local bank, such is Credito Emiliano S.p.A, and to understand the process of internationalisation of those firms involved in it. After acknowledging the significance of worldwide trade nowadays, small and medium enterprises located in the Italian territory become aware that to internationalise their steps have to be led also by the instruments a bank can offer them. Thanks to the experience of internship in the international office of Credito Emiliano, it was possible to observe how the bank organises itself to offer the best support to SMEs. This support is divided into different phases; from the analysis of the international market to the instruments for internationalisation and for international payments. In detail, this paper analyses the most internationally used instruments of payment, and how these ensure not only the delivery of the goods or the provision of a service, but also their punctual payment. Lastly, through the presentation and analysis of some documentary credits and international guarantees texts, issued by the international office of Credem, it was possible to notice the importance of the adoption of a common system of communication, the SWIFT system; such system is internationally used to simplify the emission of such instruments and the achievement of the commercial targets of the enterprises, alongside the bank’s. This not only satisfies the customer needs, but it also guarantees the coverage of the risks the bank may incur during this process. The data under scrutiny outlined Credem performances, in a recent time frame, and confirm how such necessities are increasingly demanded to maintain a relevant commercial position on the world market.
