Abstract
This dissertation aims at analysing whether there is a correlation between social embeddedness and prosocial behaviour. Social embeddedness is a concept which suggests that the economic action is deeply influenced by social structures and mechanisms. Prosociality, on the other hand, is an umbrella term which encompasses all types of behaviours and acts performed by individuals to the benefit of others. The present dissertation is divided into three chapters, and it will focus primarily on the prosocial behaviour of fairness, which indicates an individual's ability to treat others fairly.
Chapter one will trace the origins of the concept of embeddedness and its impact on the rejection of the economic theories based on the rational decision-making process of individuals.
Chapter two will provide an overwiew of the concept of prosociality – also known as prosocial behaviour or other-regarding behaviour – and of its main characteristics.
The final chapter will try to assess whether a link exists between social embeddedness and prosociality expressed in the form of fairness.Through the administration of a survey to a heterogeneous sample of subjects, an analysis will be conducted in order to investigate how social mechanisms influence human tendency to exhibit prosocial traits, such as the tendency to act in conformity with the principles of fairness and equity.
