The Master’s thesis project was developed at Dallara Automobili S.p.a with the aim of introducing a robotic arm, actuated by means of three electric motors, for flow field measurements in the Dallara Wind tunnel facility.
Even if nowadays the race car models tested in the wind tunnel are extremely detailed and are able, also by means of active systems, to simulate closely the reality, still the characterization of the flow field behavior in the volume surrounding the model is a fundamental task, both for the experimental aerodynamics development and for correlation purposes with the Computational Fluid Dynamics.
Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop and validate by means of experimental tests a logic of actuation with the GNU Octave Programming Language for the robotic arm, aimed at managing properly not only the input and output data of the measurements, but also the detection of the interferences and correct positioning of the probes during the acquisitions.
Furthermore, the new system has been set up and tested both on a dedicated test bench and during a dedicated wind tunnel test session performed with a Le Mans Prototype racing car. The integration of the robotic arm in the wind tunnel measurement system was tested, measuring total pressure by means of Kiel probes . The most relevant results of the testing phases are reported and commented, as far as the business secret is properly preserved.
