Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of CFD programs and codes for the study and resolution of engineering problems, in particular regarding the internal cylinder analysis, due to the fact that these programs allow to considerably reduce time and costs, while maintaining an excellent level of predictivity and accuracy. Moreover, the information that can be obtained from a CFD-3D analysis is significantly higher than the related experimental case. In this light few years ago Siemens launched the In-Cylinder plug-in, within the CFD-3D STAR-CCM+ software, especially dedicated to internal cylinder engine analyses. Since its release date, the software has shown various improvements, pushing Ferrari testing its potential. The thesis, made in association with Ferrari, aims to evaluate the validity and reliability of this solver. To do this, a high-power GDI engine has been studied focusing the thesis activity only on the combustion phase through the STAR-CCM+ In-Cylinder Tool. Then, the results were compared with the STAR-CD (reference software for internal cylinder analysis) and experimental ones. As specified above, the simulations were carried out only during the combustion phase, starting before the spark ignition. As for the initial and boundary conditions, these were imported from STAR-CD, where the cold flow simulation results were available. A check was made to see if the imported conditions actually corresponded to the two software.
During the set-up phase, considering the simplicity which allowed creating a mesh within STAR-CCM+, a sensitivity on mesh quality is carried out, changing parameters, such as cell size, surface size, prism layer’s height, growth volume rate, surface curvature and maximum core transition layer. The software, to evaluate the mesh quality, provides different functions, which will be analysed throughout the thesis. Therefore, the aim here was to understand which was the impact of the above-mentioned parameters on these functions.
Moving to the central part of the activity, several simulations were carried out, starting from premixed or fuel stratification as STAR-CD pre-spark conditions. And again, other simulations concerning spark sweep and sensitivity on octane number were carried out. For the above-mentioned cases it has been used the ECFM-3Z combustion model, with its internal knock model. Then, some considerations from STAR-CCM+ In-Cylinder simulation results are reported. Already from the beginning simulations, just with some little model alignments, coherent pressure traces and burning curves were obtained compared to both STAR-CD and experimental data as well.
