Global coffee value chain (GVC) is a concept that creates priceless chances for developing countries in several fields and industries. As one of the top consuming goods all over the world, coffee emerged as an attractive subject in term of research about studying on GVCs. Additionally, for a long period of time until now, Vietnam has been one of the top coffee manufactures and exporters in the world with the increase in both volume and value in the international market. However, little is known empirically about the role of Vietnam in the global coffee value chain, how Vietnam has acted in each stage of global coffee value chain. As a result, this paper looks at the role of Vietnam in global coffee value chain, in term of its both internal and external activities. By using the data about coffee export includes volume and value, in comparison to the global level, the data about Vietnamese coffee market which draws a picture about the performance of Vietnamese coffee in each market, in each stages of the global coffee value chain, how Vietnam presents and its participation and how Vietnamese typical types of coffee enterprise act and contribute to the global coffee value chain. Therefore, the performance of Vietnam in global coffee value chain can be seen and studies through various dimensions, in each market with different types of customer, how a private company – a family company acts differently compared to a state-owned company in the global coffee value chain. Examining the research, the paper argues that Vietnam is playing a crucial role in the global coffee value chain, especially in the early stages such as: cultivation, harvesting and exporting. The paper finishes with the reasons why Vietnam’s coffee has become a major player in the international coffee market and global coffee value chain, a long with some recommend how to improve the development of Vietnamese coffee with the purpose of reaching higher targets.
