Abstract
The automotive industry and engine design are strongly ruled by performance and legislation demands, which include emissions regulations. These requirements became more and more stringent in the last few years, leafing designers to carry out more detailed studies to comply with them, increasing the efficiency of the engine without compromising its main functionality. The interaction between materials plays a fundamental role, given that it has been estimated that up to 15% of the power developed by the engine is lost due to friction. The aim of this thesis is to carry out an analysis of the pin-roller contact in a valvetrain of a heavy-duty Diesel engine, to determine its tribological performance and the effect of a material change. In particular, the current configuration consists of a steel roller coupled to a bronze pin. The tribological performances of this couple and the effect of adopting a DLC-coated pin are investigated.
The study is divided in two parts: microscopic and macroscopic analysis. Within the microscopic analysis, samples of two different DLC coatings are analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). These samples have been tested with a test bench. It is therefore possible to analyze any wear present and to determine the morphology and layering of the coating.
In the macroscopic analysis part, various configurations of pin-roller couples are subjected to tests on the test bench, to simulate some working conditions of the engine. Two test configurations can be distinguished: with a cylindrical cam and with a lift cam. The lift cam aims to simulate the transient condition that occurs in the engine, with variable load during every revolution. The aim of these tests is to determine the effect of the rotational speed and of the normal load acting on the couple, both in presence and absence of lubricant.
