Abstract
The thesis activity below focuses on the research and experimental analysis of a particular type of seismic isolator, called CASM system.
For the thesis to be developed it will be necessary an important phase of initial research on the mechanisms of operation of what are the most traditional isolators and of the parameters useful and necessary for their characterization.
Once these parameters have been introduced, a section will follow concerning the description of the type of isolator analyzed here and of the fundamental unit that constitutes it, that is the CASM connecting rod.
For the characterization of the behaviour of the material constituting the connecting rod, it will also be necessary to know adequately the constitutive bond of the same. In the light of this premise it will be clear the need to provide a theoretical explanation that justifies any laws used for the definition of the constitutive bond.
Then follows an experimental part in which it is planned design and laboratory analysis of the connecting rod. It is mentioned in this section that will be fundamental, in this regard, the study of buckling-resistant shirts, in particular the choice of the distances of the same will serve to avoid buckling phenomena on the one hand, on the other will involve phenomena of confinement of the material that will modify the constitutive bond. One of the aims of this thesis will be to understand the extent to which the presence of shirts will alter the mechanical characteristics of the material.
Another objective will be, through the analysis and processing of these data, to evaluate the mechanical parameters characteristic of the normal isolators and, depending on them, to quantify the dissipative characteristics of the device.
It is worth mentioning at this stage that this technology appears to be rather new and that the experiment in question will be one of the first to be carried out and will cover a preliminary phase of the project. For this reason, it is stressed that the values in terms of displacement obtained in the following treatment, can not be considered valid for the seismic isolation of structures but are useful for the understanding of the potential of this system and for directing it to the isolation of industrial equipment, for example
