Riassunto analitico
Questa tesi si propone di esplorare la commedia Shakespeariana “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” e alcuni degli elementi testuali e tematici più rilevanti, assieme alle produzioni teatrali e cinematografiche nel corso del tempo, con l’obiettivo di evidenziare l’attuale rilevanza dell’opera teatrale.
Il primo capitolo funge da introduzione generale a Shakespeare, alla sua infanzia, la sua istruzione, e le opinioni che di lui avevano i suoi contemporanei, così da poter rispondere ai quesiti e ai dubbi che riguardano la paternità delle sue opere; questo capitolo presenterà inoltre degli esempi che riguardano I modi in cui Shakespeare venga adattato e appropriato da diverse culture e per svariate ragioni.
Il secondo capitolo introdurrà la commedia di Shakespeare, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, contestualizzando l’opera nel suo tempo. Un’analisi delle varie fonti che Shakespeare ha usato per scrivere il suo play è seguita da un tentativo di fornire una datazione più esatta all’opera. Questo capitolo approfondirà il teatro elisabettiano e le prime messinscena del play, in modo da considerare la popolarità di A Midsummer Night’s Dream al tempo di Shakespeare, insieme a un’osservazione sugli artigiani nel play come commento sulla condizione stessa del teatro.
Due capitoli sono dedicati ad alcuni degli elementi testuali e tematici del play. Infine, questa tesi esplorerà il percorso dell’opera dopo la morte di Shakespeare, dal post-restaurazione inglese ai giorni nostri, con un focus particolare sulla produzione teatrale di Brook del 1970, così come degli adattamenti cinematografici.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream è stata una delle opere più amate di Shakespeare; la sua natura prismatica e complessa supporta interpretazioni multiple e differenti, in base alle proprie esperienze e alle prospettive . L’opera teatrale continua ad essere rilevante fino ad oggi in quanto riflette la realtà che esperiamo in un groviglio costante di fantasia e rinnovamento.

Abstract
This thesis aims to explore Shakespeare’s comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and some of its most relevant textual and thematic elements, as well as its theatrical and filmic productions through time, with the goal to highlight the play’s relevance today.
The first chapter serves as a general introduction to Shakespeare, his early life, his education, and his contemporaries’ opinions on him, so as to be able to answer the questions and doubts regarding the authorship of his works; this chapter will also give examples of the ways in which Shakespeare has been appropriated by different cultures and for different reasons.
The second chapter will introduce Shakespeare’s comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, contextualising the work in its time. An analysis of the various sources Shakespeare used to write this play is followed by an attempt to give the play a more accurate dating. This chapter then delves into the Elizabethan theatre and the early stagings of the play, in order to touch upon the popularity of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Shakespeare’s times, together with an observation on the relevance of the artisans in the play as a metatheatrical commentary.
Two chapters are dedicated to some of the textual and thematic elements of the play. Finally, the thesis will explore the afterlife of the play, from after the Restoration to our days, with a particular focus on Brook’s 1970 production, as well as some filmic adaptations.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been one of Shakespeare’s favourite plays, and its prismatic, complex nature allows for multiple and diverse interpretations, based on one’s own experiences and perspective. The play stays relevant to this day since it reflects the reality we experience in a constant entanglement with fantasy and renewal.
