Abstract
In this thesis work, the sliding tribological behavior of four different Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coatings was studied, with the aim of carrying out a comparative investigation and determining which one is the most suitable for automotive applications. The microstructure of the samples was characterized by SEM and EDS analysis; microhardness (nanoindentation) and substrate adhesion (scratch test) were measured. Their friction and wear resistance against a steel counterpart were characterized by pin-on-disc test. After the tribological tests, the wear tracks of both pins and samples were inspected by microscopy and profilometry analysis to assess their wear mechanisms and measure the wear volumes. The data was employed for the creation of the wear and friction maps of the samples. Specific wear rates exhibit marked sensitivity to contact conditions (applied load and sliding speed) in all cases. However, the threshold load and speed values, beyond which the DLC film is entirely worn out during the test, vary among different coating types.
