Abstract
The trade sector plays a fundamental role in today’s economy, as not only it represents the link between production and consumption, but also because it strongly contributes in influencing the purchasing behavior and preferences of the final consumers.
Given this increasing importance of distribution, the harsh competitive environment and the fast pace at which today’s world changes, the manufacturer needs to manage not only consumer marketing but also to manage in a strategic way the relationship with its trade customers, today partners. This approach is called trade marketing, which is a set of marketing strategies implemented to strengthen the relationship with intermediate customers to stand out from competition and to better reach together the final consumer.
In particular, especially when it comes to industries such as the ceramic tiles’ one, where distribution mostly happens through indirect channels, acting in a trade marketing orientation is key to maintain the competitive advantage: it is indeed in the retailer’s showroom that the final consumers interact with the product, having the possibility to experience it through the sense of touch, sight and imagination.
Thus, the purpose of this master thesis is to investigate the trade marketing orientation in the ceramic tiles sector by providing a case study: the case of the Cerdisa Ricchetti Group (GCR), an historic ceramic tile manufacturer that operates in the internationally known Sassuolo district.
Much of the information collected and presented is the result of the internship experience occurred between November 2022 and March 2023 at the GCR marketing department.
The thesis is structured in four parts described as follows: the first chapter will focus on the definition of the trade marketing concept through literature review and its evolution overtime. Furthermore, the trade marketing process will be explained, as well as all the levers that can be implemented in order to strengthen the supplier-retailer relationship. Chapter two will focus on the concept of the showroom as the place for shopping experience, and will explain the levers through which retailers can gain customers’ loyalty and differentiate themselves from competitors. The third chapter will be concerned with the ceramic tiles industry and the segmentation of its distribution channels. After providing the most recent worldwide industry dynamics, in general, and the competitive advantage of the Sassuolo district, in particular, the characteristics of different intermediaries as well as final consumers will be presented. Furthermore, after having explained the factors that affect the purchasing decision of ceramic tiles, both from the final consumer and distributors perspective, the relationship between Italian ceramic tile suppliers and their distributors in the current situation, affected by Russia-Ukraine conflict and Covid-19, will be explained. Finally, the fourth chapter will be dedicated to the GCR case study, which is about the implementation of a TM project with one of the company’s most important clients in Italy: Berni Store. Through a comprehensive analysis, from the strategic planning and the implementation, to the explication of the final results, all the phases of the project will be presented, showing, at the end, how a TM operation of such kind successfully works also in the ceramic tiles sector.
