Abstract
Is there a relationship between the characteristics of the different Italian provinces and the gender gap in STEM high schools? The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the existence of this relationship through a panel dataset consisting of the 111 Italian provinces monitored for a time period of 11 years, from 2009 to 2019. As expected, in almost all Italian provinces, males are more likely than females to enrol in STEM high schools. However, the analysis based on an OLS regression supports the lack of relationship between the Italian provinces’ characteristics considered in this study and the gender gap in STEM high schools. Nevertheless, unexpectedly, an in-depth study concerning scientific lyceums reveals that, in most provinces, females are more likely than males to enrol in scientific lyceums. Everything else given, this proportion rises with the proportion of women in the provincial government system and decreases with the proportion of university degrees on the total number of residents aged over 22.
