Abstract
Starting from the 1990s, not only have social media radically changed global communication, but they have widely influenced also the evolution of marketing techniques. The aim of the present study is to analyze the peculiar marketing strategies adopted nowadays by two extremely different business sectors: household appliances (especially kitchen appliances) and cosmetics. The interest in such business sectors stemmed from the recent introduction of shopping tools on Instagram and from the emergence of evident commercial features of social media.
As case studies, four important companies were chosen, since they belong to the European and Italian context: Electrolux AB and Smeg S.p.A. for the home appliances sector; Zoeva GmbH and Diego Dalla Palma (Cosmetica S.r.l.) for the cosmetic sector. For each case study, all the posts published on Instagram from the 1st December 2019 to the 15th February 2020 were analyzed, both from the visual and the textual point of view. The visual and the textual analysis aimed at identifying which companies adopted display advertising, visual storytelling, content marketing or influencer marketing strategies. In particular, the visual analysis was conducted manually, while the textual analysis was based on the creation of two corpora for each brand (caption corpus and hashtag corpus) and on the subsequent analysis of these corpora through the software AntConc. Finally, the efficiency of the marketing strategies adopted by each brand was assessed following two parameters: the popularity of each business profile in terms of followers and the engagement rate of such followers in terms of their interactions with the published contents.
As far as the structure of the present dissertation is concerned, the first chapter was dedicated to the framework of development and evolution of marketing over time, from traditional marketing to social media and social mobile marketing. The second chapter explains the marketing strategies examined in the case studies, such as display advertising, visual storytelling, content marketing and influencer marketing. The third chapter focuses on the presentation of materials and research methodology; the fourth and fifth chapters contain the actual analysis of the four abovementioned brands. Finally, the results of the present study are described and investigated more in detail in chapter six, together with the limitations of this study and some suggestions for future research.
