This study focuses on the development of a methodology to address cooling design and thermal management of a directly oil cooled machine during the conceptual phase of the design process. The theoretical concepts of fluid-dynamics and heat transfer are treated as well as the fundamental concepts behind the simulations tools employed in this work. The cooling of the stator lamination and its optimization is addressed. The objectives, the optimization steps and the results are reported and discussed. The outcome is the definition of an optimum configuration. The thermal analysis of the entire machine characterized by the best stator configuration is then investigated. The test case and the simulation settings are described. The temperature results are presented and compared with the experimental ones. Finally, conclusions are discussed.
