Abstract
The aim of the project is to spray copper powders onto a stainless steel with different surface roughness (Rz= 1.5 µm, 15.6 µm, 33.9 µm, 37.3 µm, 51.0 µm) in order to understand if and how much the substrate roughness can influence the adhesion and the coating properties. The deposition and the characterization of the sprayed coatings were carried out in Helmut Schmidt Universität laboratories, Hamburg, Germany.
Properties investigation was focused on: deposition efficiency, microstructure, porosity content, hardness and cavitation resistance. The characterization techniques included: laser diffraction particle size analysis , in order to obtain the feedstock powder particle size distribution; optical microscopy with image analysis software used for the calculation of porosity and coating thickness; electron microscopy (SEM), to study powder properties and and the microstructure of substrates and coatings; nanoindentation testing to measure the hardness of substrate, coating and their interface; cavitation erosion tester, to measure the cavitation resistance.
