Abstract
Conventional surface-structuring processes often show two important disadvantages. Firstly, surface finishing is often neeeded, after the process itself. Secondly, conventional surface-structuring processes are based on the removal of material, which is wasted without any further use during processing. This means an increase of the processing costs.
A new approach of structuring metallic surfaces is structuring by remelting with laser radiation. In this process the material is reallocated while molten, with no ablation. The surface structure results from a laser-controlled self-organization of the melt pool due to surface tension. After the promising results attained for hot work steel 1.2343 (AISI: H11), current research is focused on expand the spectrum of processable materials.
The cold work steel 1.2379+ is used in a wide range of industrial applications, especially for cold forging tools in automotive industry. In this thesis, surface structuring by laser remelting of the aforementioned metal is investigated. The procedural principle is based on a sinusoidal modulation of laser power while the laser beam is moved over the surface. The power required to melt the material represents the lower laser power limit, while the point just before a clear evaporation of material can be observed is the criteria for determining the upper laser power limit. The investigation is focused on the influence of the procedural parameters, such as laser beam diameter (125, 250, 500 µm), scanning velocity (100, 200, 400, 800 mm/s), structure wavelength (0.5 - 8 mm), number of passes (1 - 64), with the aim of characterize the structure achieved, basically in terms of structure height, for single tracks. Varying the track offset (7.8125 - 250 µm), the structural characteristics have been analysed along fields of different sizes, depending on the used structure wavelength, for different number of passes.
The results show that 1.2379+ cold work steel is well suited for structuring by laser remelting, considering the achieved structure heights and the relative scanning velocities. The maximum structure height with the best quality is reached with a 500 µm laser beam diameter, structure wavelength of 8 mm, track offset of 32 µm, scan velocity of 400 mm/s and number of passes equal to 16.
