Abstract
This paper describes experimental activities carried out on GTRM (Glass Textile Reinforced Mortars) composite systems, with a fiber lime mortar matrix reinforced with continuous glass knitted textile, usually used in construction as a reinforcement material for structural elements. The activities described start from the casting of thin rectangular samples, called coupons, subjected to a uniaxial tensile test, and from prismatic samples subjected to a three-point bending test and subsequent compression of the broken parts. For the matrix, two different class M5 fiber-reinforced lime mortars were used, one containing synthetic microfibers, produced by Bacchi Srl (BM) and the other, produced by Kerakoll Spa in a non-fiber version, with 2% additives by weight of short glass fibers of 6 mm in length (KM). To overcome the characteristic problem associated with composite materials with an inorganic matrix, represented by the weak interaction between reinforcement and matrix, glass knitted textile were treated superficially (coating): using the sol-gel technique, nano-particles of silica (SC), possibly with the addition of halloysite (HC) nano-clay particles. These coatings aim to improve the interface between glass knitted textile and the matrix layers and the surface roughness, to increase the performance of the composite system. In addition to the absolute performance, it refers to the performance compared to samples with uncoated reinforcement (UC). The prismatic samples are made without reinforcement, in order to determine the ductility of the fiber matrix. The aim is to quantify the benefits brought about by the coupling of fibers dispersed in the matrix with nano-coatings on the reinforcement phase in such systems, emphasizing the role of the ductility of the matrix in promoting the action of coatings, with particular emphasis on cases with halloysite nano-clay, HC. The BM matrix, even if fibrous, shows a more brittle behavior, with higher strength values and low ultimate deformation, probably due to the synthetic microfibers and the fine grain size. The KM matrix demonstrates a ductile behavior, with high values of deformation energy in the bending test on the prismatic samples, thanks also to the 6 mm glass fibers. The improvements in the glass knitted textile / matrix interface, due to the coatings, are evident in the tensile tests, with an increase in tensile strength in the peak load values and deformation capacity. These benefits extend to rupture, which occurs by internal delamination between the phases. In both the BM and KM matrices, it is observed that greater reproducibility of the results, therefore less statistical variability, is associated with halloysite HC. In particular, G-KM-HC, the combination of the surface coating HC with the ductile KM matrix brings a very significant performance increase. This is not achieved in the case of the fragile BM matrix, which does not allow to develop the post-peak benefits due to the coating. To obtain the analyzed and processed data, the DIC technique was used, to obtain the behavior curves and values of interest, processing the data with the use of the Vic 2D software. As confirmation of the results and the behavior of the materials and treatments, SEM scans, Scanning Electron Microscope, on the fibers extracted from the coupons and on the matrices, post mechanical tests, considering the chemical compositions were carried out. In each glass knitted textile treated, the matrix materials linked to them were evidential, demonstrating the effectiveness of the improvement of the interface zone with respect to UC cases.
