Abstract
New storage technology is bringing HDD capacity to over 60TB per actuator. However, the servo mechanical capability does not increase with area density. As a result, the speed of the high-capacity drives is becoming too slow to read / write all the data the drive can store.
This new architecture, multi-actuator drives, poses the following major challenge: the target actuator information of each IO request must be intelligently used by the I / O subsystem. Otherwise, the system has little or no control over the load balancing between the actuators; some actuators may be underused or remain completely inactive. An open-source solution has been developed and designed within the Linux kernel to better manage a multi-actuator hard disk.
