Abstract
The recent legislation in terms of tailpipe emission and pollutant formation is pushing the engine design towards higher thermal efficiency. This is pursued by adopting high-boost and downsizing. The resulting increase in power density and reduction fuel consumption is counteracted by the higher risk of knock in SI engines. A CFD model able to predict knock occurrence in spark-ignition engines is developed. This is based on the fuel-specific chemical anti-knock quality of the adopted gasoline. A look-up table approach is developed and implemented in a commercial CFD code and cell-wise chemical kinetics is synthesized. The end-gas knock tendency is analyzed and the most knock-favorable locations are identified in the combustion chamber. The model is applied on a knock prediction analysis of a production turbocharged GDI engine, whose validation is carried out on experimental data at the edge of knock. Ensemble average knock prediction is first carried out thanks to RANS full-cycle simulation. In the second part, cycle-resolved knock tendency and combustion cycle-to-cycle variability are evaluated in a Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) analysis of the same operating condition. |
