Riassunto analitico
Universities play an entrepreneurial role for the accomplishment of their Third Mission, which reflects the idea of engagement with social and economic development. For this purpose, univerisities seek to generate, transfer and apply knowledge and capabilities outside their academic environments. Among different tools through which knowledge can be transferred to industry and society, increasing attention is put on academic entrepreneurship as a mechanism of knowledge commercialization. The present work focuses on Italian Academic Spin-offs. Specifically, the objective of the research study is to provide empirical evidence on the growth phenomenon in a sample of 110 spin-offs from italian universities. For the time period 2017-2020, growth is analysed in combination with changes in team composition, starting from the assumption that different combinations of academics, with heterogeneous role, and non-academics profiles within the entrepreneurial team may have different implications for ASOs growth outcomes. Further, this work aims to contribute to the ongoing debate about the most suitable set of indicators for studying growth in the context of high-tech and knowledge-based firms like ASOs.
