Abstract
The interest of the scientific community in the study of innovative materials, such as high performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites has led, thanks to the presence of extremely revolutionary raw materials and stringent controls linked to the factory process, to a significant increase in mechanical capacity. Through appropriate experimental evidence found over the years, it was possible to highlight how the applications and interventions using high and very high performance HPFRCC / UHPFRC fiber-reinforced mortars allow to obtain an increase in the ductility and stiffness of the section. High performances have therefore made these materials (HPFRCC / UHPFRC) more suitable than ordinary concrete or normal strength concrete (NSC) for the repair and reinforcement of existing reinforced concrete structures. Thanks to its innovative composition, it has a somewhat improved microstructure, free of imperfections and impurities, capable of also guaranteeing a high degree of durability, higher than that found in ordinary cementitious materials so far. All these important factors have allowed the use of the material in interventions aimed at the maintenance and restoration of existing structures and, moreover, have made it possible to mitigate the environmental impacts of the normal life cycle of an ordinary concrete work (from the initial stages linked to the production of the material, passing through the single maintenance intervention and finally the decommissioning process). This last aspect has a fundamental importance, as the current interest in the engineering-structural field is increasingly aimed at investigating solutions capable of guaranteeing, in addition to an adequate restoration and enhancement of the existing building, an appropriate and increasingly necessary environmental impact reduction. Although the use of HPFRCC / UHPFRC corresponds to a significant increase in the mechanical characteristics of the composite element, one of the most interesting problems that has been exciting the studies of numerous researchers for years is the possible risk of incompatibility in terms of adhesion to the interface between two different cementitious materials. The interface connection between the concrete substrate and the high / very high performance mortar coating layer reinforced by the use of steel fibers can fail after a certain period of time due to both volumetric variations between the two linked materials (long-term behavior) and due to specific effects of the load conditions on the restored structure. Precisely for this reason, the characterization of the long-term interface behavior and the study of the effect of time-dependent phenomena on the adhesion between the external overlay and existing concrete elements requires a complex study and represents a problem involving a high number of interacting parameters between the two elements of the composite under investigation, which also do not always turn out to be completely defined. In this thesis work, an experimental test was conceived by the Author aimed at characterizing the long-term time-dependent deformation behavior at the interface of composite beams in ordinary concrete restored through the use of HPFRCC. The aim is to investigate how the effect of viscoelasticity in conditions of constant load over time can modify the bond at the interface between the existing substrate and the overlay.
