India is a market presenting unique opportunities, at global level, due to its potentialities and growth rates, even with its complexities. Politically wise, 2019 will be an important year because of the general election which will confirm the current Modi Government or open new scenarios. During its mandate, Modi’s Government triggered import reforms and economic development programmes aimed at modernizing the country, attracting foreign direct investments and boosting foreign trade. Under the framework of the rediscovered political and economic bilateral cooperation between the country and Italy, sanctioned by the historical meeting between the former Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi occurred in 2016 after a difficult diplomatic period, today more than ever is important for Italian companies to enter the vibrant Indian market and exploit the opportunities deriving from it. Starting from the business sectors defined as strategical for the bilateral trade between the two countries, this paper is aimed at analysing the internationalization process of the “Bel paese” companies in the big Asian country. Which are the features of the Indian market and which are the opportunities arising from the new governmental liberal imprint and from the country’s economic development? Which are the possible entry modes available for foreign companies? How Italian companies can exploit the opportunities derived by the reborn diplomatic alliance and survive the difficult bureaucratic Indian legal environment? Which one is today the role and the importance of Indian internationalization consulting companies helping foreign organizations with the establishment of an Indian entity and the required legal compliances? What are the future trends and prospects Italian companies should invest in? By studying two different business cases of internationalization related to two of the relevant business sectors defined strategical by both countries’ Government and adopting two different entry mode, the paper will try to answer those questions. This paper is the result of a study programme developed in the framework of the international collaborations between the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the Amity University of Noida. Besides the research conducted through the study of secondary data, the drafting of this paper enjoyed the assistance of the Italian origin consulting company established in India Octagona India Pvt. Ltd. The companies in object of the cases have been contacted and provided their contributions through interviews and data provision.
