Abstract
Thermal management of power electronics is gaining critical importance in many
applications. With the advances in electronics and communication technology, several applications require electronic components to be faster, smaller, able to handle higher amount of power and more reliable. Both small size and high power unfortunately lead to higher heat fluxes that need to be transferred from the components to avoid high temperatures and failure. The requirements of high power dissipation and miniaturization demand cooling rates which cannot be obtained using traditional cooling methods. Direct contact cooling using multiple jet impingement is considered as one of the most effective solution. Impinging jets has been widely used to cool elements exposed to high temperature and high heat flux environments. This is due of its advantages in the effective removal of locally concentrated heat and the easy adjustment to the location where the cooling is needed. The multiple jet impingement heat transfer problem is complex and systematic study to assess its effectiveness is essential. For this purpose, a deeply literature review has been conducted before numerically investigating the performance of the micro-jet cooling technique both in terms of heat exchange and mechanical efficiency. A test case validation was essential to certain the best approach to perform the simulations. As a result, SST k − ω turbulence model has been identified as one of the most accurate one. Successively, several arrangements of nozzle array on a single power module have been analyzed in order to individuate a good compromise between the thermal and mechanical behaviour. It was found as geometrical parameters strongly affect the physical phenomena, such reason it has led to evaluate different nozzle diameter and aspect ratio. The ratio between the nozzle-to-jet spacing and the nozzle diameter was the only parameter kept constant. Moreover, configurations including chamfered nozzle have been studied in order to understand how the shape of nozzle affect the performances. Furthermore, also the dimples introduction on the target surface has been investigated. To complete the investigation, a heat exchanger involving the entire control unit has been studied by virtue the obtained results on a single power module. Good results were found by adopting micro-jet architecture.
