Abstract
Fiber optic sensors can be used for sensing temperature, strain, pressure, pH, either
as a direct or indirect measurement. The aim of this thesis is a pH sensor based on
an interferometric structure, manufactured by splicing a section of thin-core fiber in
between two standard single mode fibers. The main part of this work is focused on
one refractive index sensor that is compared with two different read out systems. The
first system use a supercontinuum laser as source and an optical spectrum analyzer
for collecting the spectrum out of the sensor. The second system has been set up
in order to estimate if it possible to reduce the costs for the read out system. It is
composed by an EDFA as light source and a DWDM together with a power meter for
reading out the response. Further, a biocompatible pH sensisitive hydrogel has been
studied. This hydrogel is to be used as coating for the sensitive part of the sensor.
The hydrogel swells/contracts when immersed in solutions with different pH values.
The swelling/contraction induces frequency shifts in the spectrum similar to the way
different refractive index solutions do.
