Abstract
Hollow slab bridges became popular in the beginning of the 1970's because of economic and constructing advantages. This type of bridge is typically constructed by placing precast or prestressed box beams adjacent to each other, grouting the small longitudinal joints between slabs typically called “shear-keys” or “key-ways” and casting a reinforced concrete deck. The major drawback in the construction of these bridge superstructure systems is the lack of available analysis and models for the design of the connection between the precast members.
An experimental research is performed in order to study the failure mode of a hollow core slab bridge built in the Testing Centre of Engineering Structures of the College of Civil Engineering in Fuzhou University, Yishan campus, Fuzhou, Fujian, PRC. The bridge is built according to the standard drawings of Fujian Province Traffic Planning Design Institute and Chinese code JTG D62-2004 (Code for design of highway reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete); the structure is composed by three slabs, span length is 8.0 m and width of the bridge is 3.74 m.
Load is applied to the bridge by hydraulic jacks in the position of vehicle load specified by Chinese code JTG D60-2004 (General code for design of highway bridges and culverts). Deflection of the slabs, strain of the steel bars, cracking at the bottom of the bridge and de-bonding between
hinge-joints and slabs are studied through dial indicators and strain gauges.
FEM analysis of the bridge is then performed through software ABAQUS, this allows making comparison and approve the reliability of experimental results. Finally, FEM models of the bridge are made supposing different thickness of the cast-in-place layer in order to propose an improvement of the structural behaviour.
