Knowledge transfer has attracted growing interest among managers. However, implementing it remains a challenge for organizations, especially due to the differences and distances between their business processes and mindsets. This study deals with studying the intra-organizational knowledge transfer between the parent company and subsidiaries abroad based on the type of relationship existing between them, adopting the perspective of the headquarter. Starting from a brief theoretical background, the first chapter will investigate the various organizational forms and strategies pursued by multinationals organizations and the related roles and responsibilities assumed by subsidiaries operating abroad. Continuing, the second chapter starts by explaining the growing shift towards the knowledge-based view of organizations, according to which organizations are increasingly becoming knowledge-based. A definition of knowledge, knowledge management and knowledge transfer will be provided. Afterwards, it will be studied the factors and mechanisms that hinder and facilitate transfer between units belonging to the same organization. Furthermore, in the same chapter, will be investigated the role of new digital technologies and cultural differences in the transmission of information. In particular, this research is based on qualitative research concerning a real case study. The company under studied is Borghi s.p.a, a company operating in the engineering sector. The topic of interest will be explored in greater detail in relation to the parent company-subsidiary relationship, in particular by focusing on two of them, one located in China and the other one in Spain. The last two chapters will provide an explanation of the research methodology with the related research questions and some interesting considerations that emerged from the qualitative interview with the company under studied.
