This thesis examines recent market trends and global political efforts to mitigate the impact of CO2 emissions, predominantly deriving from the automotive sector. Transportation ranks among the major contributors to carbon dioxide emissions, with cars and vans alone accounting for half of global transport CO2 emissions in 2022. Rapid population and economic growth have intensified environmental challenges, prompting the automotive industry to transition towards sustainability. Global targets and agreements addressing environmental and social challenges have driven sustainable development and climate action. Furthermore, the increasing demand for innovative mobility solutions underscores the critical importance of sustainability. This study conducts an analysis of currently available eco-friendly alternatives on the market, particularly suitable for complying with current regulations and future goals. A specific focus is given to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, with dedicated experimental research which intends to build a comprehensive market landscape of worldwide vehicle sales and trends. The study also investigates the emerging markets where this technological innovation is evolving, specifically South Korea, the U.S., and Japan. The fundamental implications of a transition to a hydrogen-based economy in the light-duty vehicle sector are explored through a PESTEL analysis, examining the factors contributing to the development of fuel cell vehicles.
