Abstract
The last decades have seen the urgent feeling of reducing the energy impact of buildings. The current energetic revolution started from the new buildings and expanded to the existing ones, however, it became clear how it is important to involve also the historical buildings which are presented massively on our territory.
On the basis of this necessity, and starting from some guidelines suggested by Europe, each State provided itself with legislation that indicates the starting directions, but, so far, they have not determined the precise steps that have to be addressed.
In order to plan the energy requalification of an historical building, it is important to respect both its historical-artistic identity and the constraints placed by the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage. Indeed, each case has unique features and characteristics that have to be preserved to protect not only the architectural value of the building, but also the social identity that this represents for people.
The Ducal Palace of Modena and the related energy redevelopment project are a clear example in which energy saving must be combined with respect of historical identity. The Palace, now headquarters of the Military Academy, was built in the end of the thirteenth century and was renovated for a good part in 1600, thus becoming one of the main examples of Baroque architecture.
The thesis project has aimed the energy simulation of the Palazzo Ducale through the Trnsys program, which has made possible to perform a dynamic calculation of current consumption. Through the software, the construction of a 3D model in SketchUp and the insertion of data supplied by the user (such as the actual time of use of the heating system), it has been clarified what are the current consumptions of the building, in which moments there is the highest consumption and which are the most important sectors of energy dispersion.
Once we got to know the current energy situation of the Palace, we proceeded with the analysis of some possible solutions for the redevelopment, focusing mainly on the glazed component. Two options were considered: the application of low emission films on the frames currently present and the complete renewal of the windowed component with modern windows. In particular, three possible installations were studied: in the first case, it is project the application of low-emission films, accompanied by a silicone seal; the second case films and gaskets on the windows overlooking the squares and external streets, but new windows on the inside courtyards; in the third option it is project new windows replaced all over the building. For each solution, the initial costs and the savings that could be achieved to obtain an estimate of the return times were analyzed.
