As a vital element of the employment relationship, working time is deeply linked to changes in the labor market and with central topics pay and rewards. From the First Industrial Revolution the issue of working hours has been the center of social and political debate of the historical developments of the western world. In addition to hours of work, the other major dimension of working time is the organization of working time which is often referred to either as “work schedules” or as “working-time arrangements”. Any given number of hours of work can, at least theoretically, be organized in an almost infinite number of ways, and how those hours are organize can have important consequences for both workers and enterprises. Working-time practices across the developed world have exploded with diversity during the past few decades. The once standard 8-hour day and 40-hour workweek that emerged and reigned throughout much of the 20th century have given way to an increasing variety of working-time arrangements.
