Abstract
The development of the motorcycle behavior, namely of structural components of a racing motorcycle, such as the frame and swingarm, occurs by trying to correlate objective and measurable variables, characteristics of the individual component, such as, for example weight and stiffness, to the perception of the rider, expressed by the comments during the track tests. The measurement of the characteristic variables of the static and dynamic behavior of the individual structural component is therefore of fundamental importance. The aim of this thesis work is the development of the equipment and procedure for characterizing the modal damping of the modal shapes of the racing vehicle. The structural assembly is suitably constrained so that the modal shape obtained reproduces that observable on the complete vehicle. The frequency of the mode is regulated by the use of ballasts suitably constrained to the assembly. Once the target shape and frequency are obtained, the modal damping is estimated by studying the free and forced vibrations, using respectively the modal hammer and the electrodynamic shaker as forcing devices. Once the measurement procedure has been set up and the necessary components are designed, the increase in damping of the modes being analyzed is measured both by concentrated elements, such as hydraulic dampers, and by distributed elements, such as patches of damping material.
