Abstract
The laser engraving is becoming a very important area of research inside both the
academic and industrial world, due to its high accuracy, velocity and power. This
thesis work has the aim to present a portable and high speed galvanometric mir-
ror system which is used primarily for engraving plastic surface for an industrial
application, but which can have many _eld of applications. Many engraving laser
systems already exist and are already used by industry, but usually they have very
large dimensions and requires high power sources. Typically in fact they are used
in applications, as cutting of materials, where along with accuracy and speed, high
power laser beam is needed to cut the sample. So the aim of this project is to design
a marking system which melts the high performance typical of a laser system, ac-
curacy and high velocity, to a portable structure. This is possible because marking
the plastic does not require the usage of a very high power, both to drive the laser
and the other parts of the system; therefore small dimensions can be obtained. A
further feature of this system is the presence of a GUI (graphical user interface)
used to control all the system in an easy way.
Firstly there is a presentation and a general explanation of the main issues en-
countered during the design. In a second part related works and theory needed
to understand the system are discussed along with possible solutions for the issues
previously presented. A third central part contains the method used in evaluating
the performance of the project and the related results are showed. The final part
contains the conclusion of the work and the future improvements.
