Abstract
A selection of materials and surface treatments has been chosen to be tested in a particular corrosion environment that simulates the operating conditions of a filling machine in the food and beverages industry. Wrought Aluminum AW6082 T6 was the base alloy for the different surface treatments tested: anodizing and hard anodizing (both with and without PTFE impregnation), two commercial paints (Exelia 5010 and Exelia 9010) and three commercial conversion layers (Aluceramik, Nanoceramic and Niploy). Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy was, by contrast, tested as an alloy able to resist to corrosion in aggressive environments without any treatment. The corrosion tests were carried out through SimuCorr testing machine, according to the following procedure: immersion and dripping of the samples into hydrogen peroxide and subsequently into Topactive LA detergent, repeating this cycle two times; visual observation, open circuit potential(OCP) and mass loss measurements were performed after the corrosion test. The study was completed by acquiring electrochemical impedance spectra(EIS) during immersion of the samples in the two corrosive environments (hydrogen peroxide and detergent). Nanoindentations, scratch tests and observation of the cross section of the coatings (by optical and electron microscopy) completed the characterization of the selected materials.
