Riassunto analitico
This study analyzes the role of trust and control as governance mechanisms in the context of international strategic alliances. Some factors that may have a direct impact on the role and the effectiveness of trust and control-based mechanisms have been addressed and investigated, adopting the perspective of an Italian company engaged in an equity joint venture established with an Indian firm in the region of Ahmedabad, in India. The first chapter provides a theoretical overview about international alliances as strategic means to enter new markets overseas, starting from the identification of the main motives for cooperation to the description of the building process to establish the partnership. Subsequently, the second chapter of this work presents a theoretical analysis of the role of trust and control as governance mechanisms in the IAs context, focusing the attention on some of the main factors that can have a relevant impact on their role and efficacy. In this chapter, a particular attention is given to the study and description of emerging markets as strategic area in which the alliance can take place, underscoring the main features and the potential implications they might have in terms of governance choices. This aspect is particularly relevant for the introduction of the case-study analysis provided in the last two chapters. The investigation addresses a real case-study of an equity joint venture established in India by an Italian firm with a local partner, which study is based on qualitative research that adopts the perspective of the Italian company. Therefore, the third chapter is dedicated to the explanation of the objectives of the research and to the description of the methodology. Lastly, the fourth chapter shows the results of the qualitative survey with the key informants of the Italian firm, with a final section dedicated to the drawing of the managerial implications and the research limitations.
