Abstract
Ergonomics (or Human Factors) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and applies scientific methods to design to optimize overall system performance and human well-being from both physical and cognitive point of view. In the design of the user interface of complex systems, human factors analysis is mainly based on the subjective assessments involving samples of target users by questionnaires, user testing or interviews, with the aim of acquiring useful information on the user's perception. In this regard, the inclusion of ergonomics in the design of the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) can offer many opportunities for improvements in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, reliability and safety of the system. Therefore, to design user interfaces that are easy to use and more intuitive, the design must be conducted in a well-structured way, applying the "user-centered design" (UCD) principles in all phases of the interface life cycle, from ideation to manufacturing. The aim of the present research, carried out at CNH Industrial, was to define an approach to evaluate the quality of the User eXperience (UX) and the human-machine interaction of the new CNH cabins’ interfaces. The methodology adopted combines traditional user interface evaluation techniques with innovative tools such as eye trackers, devices for measuring eye movements, which provide insights in the allocation of visual attention. The results helped to improve human-machine interaction and solve the main usability problems from the early design stages. Finally, the study demonstrates how the use of eye-tracking and the UCD approach can offer an added value and support to the design of HMI thanks to the evaluation of their usability.
