Abstract
In the last decades we have witnessed an evolution of the storytelling techniques of the TV series, which has influenced the composition within the narration and the extradiegetic dimension. Extended narratives that develop beyond the space of the single story are gradually established. Among the different types of narrations, the most interesting one is the narrative ecosystem. The term indicates an expanding network of texts that comes from a concept and has an infinite potential for expansion. This system presents a balance, given by the connection among the texts, which share a semiotic continuum and can act as an entry point for the user.
Among the various paratexts of the narrative ecosystem, the opening credits continue to play a central role as extradiegetic elements that frame the narration. In the last few years, a new way of conceiving the opening credits has been developed. The opening credits are created as orientative paratexts, that help the viewer to orient himself in the ecosystem.
The object of my thesis will be the investigation of the nature of the opening credits as short forms and their ambivalence as introductive and orientative paratexts. I will propose an analysis of opening credits of some series, which belong to complex narrative universes, focusing on narration, discursive structures, enunciation and passional structures. Finally, I will describe the relationship between the opening credits and the audience. The focus will be on the fascinating action that these paratexts are able to exercise on the spectators and the activities of grassroots remediation of the opening credits produced by the fans.
