Abstract
In my thesis I tried to explain the meaning of prejudices and stereotypes by underlining how they affect life and society.
I analyzed the various types of contact used to try to reduce prejudice, focusing on indirect contact. Subsequently I reported several studies, the first one, realized to improve the behaviors and stereotypes of Italian adolescents towards immigrants, testing the effectiveness of indirect contact through the reading of books. The other three studies were conducted through the reading of Harry Potter's books, to understand how to improve behavior towards other groups through the reading of these popular best sellers.
In the last chapter I reported the research carried out with university students, conducted with the aim of investigating whether the direct positive contact is able to reduce the prejudice towards the target groups, in this case towards Africans. The research also aimed to understand whether it is possible to reduce prejudice even towards groups with which there is little contact and whether the latter is influenced by belonging to one's own group.
